new border punch designs
Fiskars border punches have been a favorite of many crafters for years, and these five new designs are be must-have tools. Effervescence, Apron Lace, Upper Crest, Boundary Waters, and Scallop Sentiment are each unique and add a fun touch to any paper craft project. To help demonstrate them in action, several members of the Fiskars design team have created projects-
Designer: Becky Novacek I was thrilled when i saw this new apron lace border punch! It's really versatile with the larger opening in the scallop. In this layout, i wanted to create a sort of lacey looking accent. ![]() With the current trend of ruffles, i liked the idea of mimicking rows of ruffles, with the rows of scallops. I simply used the scallop border punch on 5 -3/4" strips of papers, and then punched both sides of one of the strips that was used at the top of the rows. Using different pattern papers, as well as adding machine stitching and threaded ribbon added to the textural look. I repeated the scallops at the top of the layout right on the background cardstock. The scallop theme is repeated with the scallop punched heart accent at the bottom right. ![]() Once again, I am impressed with the ability to create different accents and embellishments, inexpensively, by simply investing in non-consumable tools, such as this awesome scallop border punch. As always, a great way to use scraps and strips of leftover papers too!
Designer: Janna Wilson ![]() It’s super simple to create this look. The key is to know and remember where you started punching on the border punch’s base plate grid. For this project, I started with ¾” wide strips of paper to create the ric rac accent strips. I punched along one side of the paper. ![]()
Designer: Katrina Simeck Border punches aren’t just for the edge of your papers! I got to work with the effervescence punch on this layout. ![]() I love using my punches to create mats for my layouts…not only do they give the edges an extra detail, but they also bring great focus to the corners. ![]() Turning the corner with your border punch can be a bit tricky. Here’s a tip that I’ve found to be useful…turn your punch over so that you can see where you’re lining up your paper. This new border punch – Effervescence – has 2 holes for every scallop. Line up the smaller hole as your punch around the corner. Don’t worry if you get an odd corner…you can easily cover up mistakes with a small embellishment (like the Heidi Grace dimensional sticker that I used here!). Another great use for border punches is to create interesting strips of cardstock by double punching. In this layout, I anchored a punched strip of cardstock with brads on each side. To ensure that both sides were even, I flipped the punch over after punching one side, and used the small hole to line up the punch.
The new Upper Crest border punch has quickly taken the #1 spot as my favorite of the Fiskars punches. I'm so happy they came out with this awesome design. It's not only great for just using as a border, but also for detail on your design. For this page I used it to create some fun elements. The possibilities for this shape are endless. ![]() The bracket shape became the layers of my skirt by punching strips out of the same paper then layering them on top. ![]() It was also used for ruffles on the top (a look that I am loving in real life too!) by lining two punched strips side by side and and a straight strip in the middle. The same idea was used for the stems of the flowers as well. I hope you can use these ideas for your own great projects using Upper Crest!
Designer: Susan Weinroth I’ve had the new Boundary Waters border punch for a few months now, which has given me plenty of time to play with it and break it in! And I have to say that I LOVE it! The wave-y design is so fun, and the perfect compliment for my many, many beach photos. I used the punch to create a layered photo mat here, in my “At the Beach” frame project. The design is easy to replicate with a few basic Fiskars tools, and could also be transferred into a layout design as well. ![]() To start, cover the top two thirds of your photo mat with yellow patterned paper. Flip the mat over to the backside and use the fingertip craft knife to trim inside the photo hole opening. Punch four strips of various colored blue patterned paper with the Boundary Waters border punch. Start adhering them to the bottom of the frame mat, overlapping each so that you can still see the waves from the piece under. ![]() Use the Ultra Shape Xpress tool and circle template to cut a partial circle from orange patterned paper and adhere to another shade of orange patterned paper. Use pinking scissors to trim around the edge of the circle. Machine stitch edge if desired. Adhere “sun” to upper corner of frame mat. Embellish sun and waves using raindots. Pop mat back into your frame, minus the frame glass and your project is complete!
