Instructions (Print version)

  1. Lightly sand box if necessary. Paint entire box with one coat of blue paint. (NOTE: do not paint any part of inside of box or it will not close properly.) Allow to dry. Apply a medium coat of crackle finish to entire box, then according to manufacturer's instructions for crackle medium, paint entire box with raw linen paint. Crackling effect should begin almost immediately. Set box aside to completely dry.
  2. Using paper trimmer, cut a piece of navy cardstock to measure 3" X 3". Directly in center of each side, punch once with border punch. This should create a decorative square. Cut 2 strips of navy cardstock to measure 1" X 10". Punch along one entire long edge of each strip.
  3. After box has completely dried, brush backside of one punched strip with decoupage adhesive. Beginning at a corner, adhere flat edge along bottom edge of box. Trim off excess after strip has been adhered to 2 sides. Repeat with second strip around rest of box. Trim excess. Apply medium pressure all along adhered strips to avoid bubbling or peeling. Brush adhesive on back of punched square. Adhere to center of top of box. Press firmly to adhere securely.
  4. Using hand punch, punch 4 circles from craft metal. Brush backs of metal pieces with decoupage adhesive and adhere one circle to each corner of punched corner. Allow to dry.
  5. Brush on a medium coat of decoupage finish over entire box. Allow to dry until finish is no longer cloudy. Repeat one or two more times, or until all surfaces have been satisfactorily covered with antiquing finish. Surface will yellow slightly as it dries.
  6. Emboss star onto piece of metal. Cut square around star using Softouch Scissors. After box has completely dried, adhere to center of punched square using craft glue.
  7. Cut a square of felt to fit inside floor of box. Adhere using craft glue.
