Card Holder

Designer: Kendra McCracken

Being a crafter, I have a collection of cards I've made but have yet to have an occasion to give them to someone. My collection has outgrown the tiny basket I had them stored in. Needing something larger, I decided to recycle some boxes from a recent purchase and make them into a card holder that I can put on display in my craft room.

This is what I started with. Poorly constructed and ugly but that doesn't mean they can't be transformed into something pretty and useful!

Instructions (Print version)

I began by taping the boxes together with packing tape.

Next I lined the sides of the interior of the box. Since all the edges will be hidden, I didn't hem them but instead adhered the fabric to the box using No Sew Fabric Fuse by Therm-O-Web, cutting it with my No. 5 Non-Stick™ Scissors. I wanted an accordian-type storage system so I created dividers using a long length of fabric. I needed excess for the final step so my cut size for my fabric was 57"L x 8 1/2"W.

I added a 1/2" hem to all the edges.

To support the fabric dividers, I cut chipboard (more recycling, a Lipton tea box this time!) with the Fiskars Desktop Trimmer to 7 1/2" x 4". To determine the cut size for my fabrics on the following steps to construct the cover for the box, I measured each side of my box and added 1" to accommodate 1/2" seam allowances. For instance, the side panels of my box are 7 3/4" x 3 3/4" so my fabric panels are 8 3/4" x 4 3/4". This gives me 1/2" extra on each side of the panel for my seam allowances.

Determining the cut sizes for the front and back covers is a little more involved but not difficult. I simply decided I wanted 2" squares on my finished cover so I added 1/2" seam allowance to each side of each piece to accommodate seam allowances. This left me with 3" x 3" squares

The outside front and back cover is constructed of 3" x 3" fabric squares, sewn together (right sides together) with a 1/2" seam allowance. I didn't want the stitching for a hem to show on the squares of my front and back panels so I zig-zag stitched in the seam allowance to prevent fraying and folded the seam allowance to the back side of the panels.

The cut size of the fabric for the bottom of the cover is 8" x 7 3/4" and it's attached to the front and back patch panels (right sides together as shown) with 1/2" seam allowances. The cut size of the fabric for the side panels are 8 3/4" x 4 3/4"

I added a 1/2" hem to the top of each side panel.

Next I stitched the side panels to the bottom panel (right-sides together), making sure not to stitch beyond the point where the bottom and front panels connect.

This is what the piece looks like once the side, front, and back panels have been attached to the bottom panel. Looking closely at the labeled points, you can see I took care not to stitch beyond the connection point (into the seam allowance) of any of the panels. Sewing past these points causes binding, preventing the cover from opening fully. Stitch the side panels to the front and back panels using a 1/2" seam allowance

Place the chipboard dividers in the box and drape the fabric over them to create the finished dividers.

Tuck the ends of the lining behind the cover.

I created labels for each divider using the Fiskars Wishes All Around and Heidi Grace Greetings stamps. Just stamp on cardstock and punch out with the XL seal of approval squeeze punch.

Now you've got a pretty, fun touch to finish off the card box and keep things organized!
