Designer:  Lisa Truesdell

This cat bed is a very simple design – but the appliquéd words and attached catnip toy add a touch of whimsy. The Fiskars USX letters templates are perfect for a project like this – no fussing with reverse printing your letters to use as a pattern for your fabric, you can just flip the template over for a perfect reverse image.

Instructions (Print version)

Cat toy :
1. Trace three 4in circles using the USX circles template onto fabric and cut out.
2. Iron one in half and stitch just below the fold line. This will be used as a pocket on the back of the toy, perfect for holding catnip.
3. Apply iron on interfacing to the back of your accent fabric.  Draw a half oval to make a body for your mouse.  Stitch into place on one of the circles.
4. Use the Round N Round Medium Squeeze Punch on scrap paper, and use the circle as a template to cut out the mouse’s ear from your accent fabric.  Stitch into place on the circle.
5. Add a button as the mouse’s eye.

6. Layer your fabric as follows – Plain circle, right side up. Half circle / pocket, right side up. Appliqued circle, right side down. Roll up your length of ribbon and pin the end at the bottom of the circles with the length going in towards the middle.
7. Stitch around the edge of the circle with a .25in seam allowance.  Leave a small gap so you can flip the fabric.
8. Add stuffing to the middle of the circles.
9. Pin the opening closed and stitch around the circle again.

Cat bed :

1. Fold your fabric in half and trace a large circle onto your fabric.  I used a pizza pan as a guide for mine.
2. Using your rotary trimmer, cut out circles from both layers of fabric.  Use a pencil to make a mark on each layer so you can line them back up properly when it’s time to put the pillow together.
3. Apply iron on interfacing to the back of your accent fabric.  Decide what you’d like to spell out on your pillow. Trace your letters with the template BACKWARDS onto the back of the fabric.

4. Using your Softgrip MicroTip Scissors, cut out each letter.
5. Arrange your letters around the outside of your circle.  Make sure you don’t put them too close to the edge – you need to leave room for your seam allowance.

6. Iron each letter in place.  Stitch each letter in place.

7. Place the plain circle right side up and your embellished circle right side down. Pin together. Pin the other end of the ribbon that’s attached to your cat toy to the bottom edge of the circle, with the toy and length of ribbon on the inside of the layers.
8. Stitch around the outside of your circles, using a .25in seam allowance. Leave a small gap so that you can flip your fabric.
9. Stuff the cat bed.  I didn’t pack it too tightly – I wanted the pillow to be nice and squishy.
10. Pin the gap you left in step 8 closed and stitch around the outside of your pillow.
