Coffee Cup Cozy

Designer: Patti Milazzo
Why use a cardboard sleeve when you can make your own cup cozy to use again and again? This cheery fabric sleeve will keep your cup’s contents hot while preventing you from burning your hands. Or if you have a cold beverage it can help insulate your drink too. Besides, it’s another simple way to be “green” and help the environment.

Instructions
(Print version)

1. Using the template provided, cut 3 sleeve shapes with scissors or a rotary cutter: -1 front from fabric (circle print) – for the front cut along the lines indicated on the template to remove a segment of the material. This space will be replaced with another fabric wedge. -1 from a lining material -1 back from fabric (circle print) -1 wedge piece (green) from other coordinating material. *Note the extra tab of material at the bottom of the sleeve design is the opening needed to turn the project out.

2. Pin the coordinating wedge piece with the cut front pieces and stitch together. Press seams open with iron.

3. Using the Circle Shape Template, trace and cut the following: 1 – 2.5” circle from red felt and cut with the Scallop Edged Shears 1 – 2” circle from yellow fabric. Machine stitch around scalloped circle once to secure. 4. Pin scalloped circle to front center of green wedge and stitch around edge twice to secure.

5. Add design to the center of the circle. For my cozy I created cherries with a little embroidery stitching and buttons. 6. Once embellishing the cozy is complete, layer your 3 sleeve pieces – right sides of fabric facing in and the lining material sandwiched between them. Pin in place. 7. At this time, cut 2 – 5” pieces of elastic; knot ends and tuck the loops inside the rounded end of the sleeve as shown. Note: the knots are on the outside so that when you turn your project out the loops will be coming out from the fabric seam correctly.

8. Stitch ¼” from the edge around the entire border except for the opening where the tab is. Note: Be sure to backstitch where you begin and end to secure your thread. 9. Use Pinking Shears to trim rounded end and corners. 10. Now turn the sleeve right side out and use the Stuffer Tool from the Sewing Multi-Tool to smooth out the rounded end and the corners, etc.
11. Carefully press your project with an iron (avoid making contact with any felt material). Then machine stitch 1/8” from the edge all the way around. 12. Attach buttons with embroidery thread to complete. Now your cozy is ready to be used!

Other suggestions: Go green even more by measuring your own travel mug and create your own template for it.
