“Coloring Time!” Crayons-To-Go

Designer: Susan Weinroth

My toddler-aged son is just now starting to love to color.  Crayons are such a great thing to pull out at a restaurant, or anytime we are waiting around somewhere.  I created this crayon-on-the-go roll up carrier for just that purpose!  And I plan on making a bunch this holiday season for all of his little friends.

Instructions (Print version)

1. Start by using the Fiskars rotary cutter and mat to trim two 6x21 inch pieces of the airplane (or your outside fabric), and a 7x21 piece of the red polka dots (or your inside pocket fabric).
2. Set airplane fabric aside.  Fold red polka dots fabric in half lengthwise – so that it now measures 3.5x21 – iron to crease.
3. Use your sewing machine to topstitch a ¼ inch inseam along the long 21 inch edge next to the folded crease.
4. Lay one piece of airplane fabric flat – right side up.  Line up the red polka dot piece on top – right side up also, so that the bottom edges line up.  Pin to secure.

5. Machine stitch along bottom with a 1/8 inch inseam to secure, removing pins as you go.
6. Place piece from step #5 right side up.  Lay ribbon – cut into two 18 inch pieces – along the middle with a 1 inch piece overlapping off of the right edge as shown.

7. Place other piece of airplane fabric on top, right side down.  Pin around edges to secure.

8. Using a ¼ inch inseam, stitch around all edges EXCEPT THE LEFT SIDE – leave this open.  Secure end points of stitching with knots or backstitching.
9. Flip right-side out.
10. Place crayons in pocket area to estimate the width needed for each crayon slot.  This will vary depending on the type of crayons you select – ie the chunky toddler crayons will need wider slots than the regular sized crayons that I used.  I found that measuring 1 inch in between each crayon, and stitching, made the perfect sized pocket.  Place pins at the interval points where you want to stitch to create your slots.
11. Then machine topsitch at the pinned interval points (only on the red polka dot part of the fabric).

12. Once all slots have been created, flip open end ends inward as shown, iron to press, and then topstitch closed.  Continue topstitch around entire edge of roll up (a walking foot on your sewing machine works best for this step).

13. Crayon roll up is ready to be stocked with crayons, rolled up, and given to a special little person in your life to enjoy!
