Fabric Coaster

Designer: Katrina Simeck During the winter, you’ll often find me with a cup of coffee or cocoa in hand. I like to have coasters around the house so that I can set my cup down without making a mess. These fabric coasters were quick & easy to make! I was thrilled to find Heidi Grace Designs fabric, and decided to a do a blue & white combination that could be used all winter long. The Fiskars Ultra Shapexpress square template was a great alternative to measuring…and the 12-in-1 Sewing Tool always comes in handy!

1. First, I created a template from cardstock using the Ultra Shapexpress and the squares template (you’ll need the 2.5” square). Use a Portable Trimmer to cut a 5” square template also. 
2. Using 2 coordinating fabric pieces, cut 2 of the 2.5” squares from each fabric pattern using Classic No. 8 Bent Scissors (Coastal).
3. Choose a fabric for the base of the coaster. Cut a 5” square from this fabric, and from the batting (you can also use fusible web in place of batting)
4. You should now have 6 squares – 4 of the 2.5” size, and 2 of the 5” size
5. Sew the 2.5” squares first: pin right sides of opposite fabrics together, and stitch one edge. Sew these pieces together along one edge, forming a 5” square. You’ll end up with a “patchwork” pattern of squares.
6. Now it’s time to layer! Put your squares together in this order: batting, 5” fabric (with wrong side facing the batting), 5” pieced fabric (with wrong side facing up)
7. Sew through all layers, around all four edges….leaving a small opening to turn coaster right side out.
8. Use the Stuffing Tool from the 12-in-1 Sewing tool to help you turn the coaster right side out (the batting layer will now be on the inside of the coaster).
9. Carefully stitch the opening closed using an invisible stitch.
