embellished hand towel

Embellished hand towels – or even bath towels! – make such a cute gift, that anyone and everyone is sure to love them. I’ve easily embellished an inexpensive hand towel here, using some basic fiskars tools, my sewing machine, and scrap fabric. The cute ruffle and appliquéd flower that I added make my gift both adorable and personal.

1. Start with a basic towel – I chose blue. Gather coordinating scrap fabric, ribbon, and other supplies.
2. Trim length of fabric for ruffle that is 5 inches wide by double the length of your towel that you are adding ruffle to.
3. Fold fabric for ruffle in half so that remaining strip is only 2.5 inches wide. Iron to crease.
4. Pin ruffle in place at the bottom of towel – creating ruffle “pleats” as you go, and pinning each one. Stitch across using sewing machine.
5. Iron fabric adhesive to wrong sides of scrap fabric (for flower appliqué) according to package directions.
6. Use circle template to trace flower circles to wrong side of fabric, repeat with stem template. Use XL mint condition punched cardstock shape as pattern for fabric “leaf” to add to appliqué. Trim all from fabric.
7. Peel off backing and iron fabric appliqué shapes into place according to package directions.
8. Use appliqué stitch (close zig zags) on sewing machine to stitch fabric pieces around the edge of each, on towel.
9. Trim ribbon the length of completed ruffle (width of towel), pin in place at top of ruffle and stitch to towel.
