Holiday Candle Jars

Holiday Candle Jars

Designer: Patti Milazzo
At craft shows, I’ve often seen this idea of placing a glass votive candle holder inside the top of a mason jar.  I think it’s such a clever and cute idea!  Many times the glass is hand painted, but I wanted to see how I could use my Fiskars tools to embellish the jars with paper accents.  I paper pieced snowflakes and snowmen with a mix of punches and used one of my favorite new tools – the Brackets & Journal Shape Template.  This project mixes economy and charm to make it an ideal gift this season.

Instructions (Print version)

1. For smaller jar, cut 3” x 12” strip of blue patterned paper; border punch both edges; then cut 12” strip of coordinating patterned paper to run along length of punched strip.  Adhere together and then to jar with Glue Dots.
2. With Ultra ShapeXpress Tool and Brackets & Journal Shape Template, cut out 2 shapes from light blue paper.

3. Use Medium and Large Twinkle, Twinkle Squeeze Punches to create 2 open star shapes for each journal shape.  Start with the smaller punch first, then Squeeze Punch around the negative with the larger punch.  Apply liquid glue to back; layer 2 stars and adhere to center of each blue journal shape.
4. Hand Punch 5- hearts and 1- ¼” circle for each star snowflake and adhere hearts around at points and circles in the centers; then attach silver mini brad to center circles.
5. Pop Up Punch 2 – Snowflakes for each journal shape and adhere next to center snowflake.
6. Stamp snowflake designs on journal shapes as shown; then use Glue Dots to adhere to opposing sides of jar.
7. Pop Up Punch 2 circles and Squeeze Punch 2 Medium Round ‘n Round circles .  Stamp smaller circles with snowflake stamp; layer each on top of larger circles; then attach a mini brads to the centers and adhere each to opposing sides of the jar.

8. Take ribbon length and tie a knot at the top of the jar; trim off excess.
9. Place jingle bells on wire length; fold in half; twist ends with Micro Tip Pliers and use thin object (I used a chopstick!) to create the coiled ends; trim off any excess wire with Wire Cutters.

10. Fill jar with candy or potpourri or other item.  Do not fill all the way to the top and be sure to use something that doesn’t melt easily.
11. Insert votive candle holder with candle and the small jar is complete!

1. For the larger jar, cut a  5” x 12” strip of blue patterned paper; border punch both edges; then cut 12” strip of coordinating patterned paper to run along length of punched strip.  Adhere together and then to jar with Glue Dots.
2. With Ultra ShapeXpress Tool and Brackets & Journal Shape Template, cut out 4 shapes from 2 different blue patterned papers.
3. Use Large and Extra Large Twinkle, Twinkle Squeeze Punches to create 2 open star shapes for 2 of the journal shapes.  As in the first candle holder, start with the smaller punch first, then Squeeze Punch around the negative with the larger punch.  Apply liquid glue to back; layer 2 stars and adhere to center of 2 of the blue journal shapes.

4. Punch 5- drop shapes from the All Scream Squeeze Punch and Hand Punch 5- ¼” circles for each star snowflake; then adhere drops and circles around at points.
5. Pop Up Punch 2 – Daisies and adhere to the centers of each snowflake then attach silver mini brad to center of each.
6. Pop Up Punch 2 – Snowflakes for each journal shape and adhere next to center snowflake.
7. Stamp snowflake designs on journal shapes as shown; then use Glue Dots to adhere to opposing sides of jar.
8. To create the snowman, Squeeze Punch 2 of each size A Little Out of Shape punches.  Adhere snowman to journal shape and add eyes, mouth; nose (orange cardstock segment of Medium Twinkle, Twinkle Squeeze Punch), and small buttons.
9. Squeeze Punch ½ of the Too Hip to be Square Squeeze Punch from black cardstock for hat; add a strip of patterned paper; and black cardstock strip for brim; adhere hat to snowman’s head.

10. As above, take ribbon length and tie a knot at the top of the jar; trim off excess.
11. Place jingle bells on wire length; fold in half; twist ends with Micro Tip Pliers and use thin object (I used a chopstick!) to create the coiled ends; trim off any excess wire with Wire Cutters.
12. Again, fill jar with candy or potpourri or other item.  Do not fill all the way to the top and be sure to use something that doesn’t melt easily.
13. Insert votive candle holder with candle and now the larger jar is done!
