I like to make creations that are at the same time: pretty, creative, my style and PRACTICAL! Sometimes, creating for the sake of creating is fine, but I love when I can make something that will be useful. Thus the concept of this project. After many years of meal planning and cooking, it’s easy to get in a rut. I decided it was about time to make a list of meals that we enjoy currently, with room to add new ideas as time passes. How to do this with a style that fits me? I have been drawn to vintage ledgers for many years, so I happened to have quite a few sitting on a shelf. I thought a ledger would be a great spot to keep menu plans because 1. they are inexpensive to pick up at thrift shops or garage sales 2. the paper is lined 3. as new ideas are added, pages can be torn out and you can start over. I think an old diary or any other vintage notebook could be used for this.

Instructions (Print version)

1. Paint the outside and inside cover of vintage ledger. Use a dry brush technique so that it doesn’t get too wet and warp the cover or pages.

2. While the paint is drying, use the  XL and L seal of approval squeeze punches to punch 9 extra large and 9 large scalloped circles. I used all scraps of Jenni Bowlin pattern papers, plus vintage sewing patterns and book pages.  Thread embroidery floss through vintage buttons and adhere smaller scallops to larger scallops then adhere  a threaded button to the center of each. Set aside. I wadded up the punched shapes and unwadded to add additional texture and shape.

3. After the first coat of paint is dry, add a different color to the bottom half of cover. While you’re painting, tear a small scrap page out of ledger and paint paper to use later.

4. Take  4 strips of pattern paper scraps 1” x 5” and use sccallop sentiment border punch on long edges and adhere to front of cover to create a simple open frame.
5. Take 4 more strips of pattern paper ¾ “ x 4.5 “ and use pinking shears on long edge and adhere to the top of the “frame” you just created on the ledger. Use wet adhesive to add rickrack to the top edge of frame.

6. Measure the inside of frame using a scrap piece of vintage book page and gently tear edges to fit. Distress and roll the top edge and adhere.
7. Handwrite title on previously painted ledger scrap and cut into a strip. Machine sew top leaving thread hanging. Adhere to inside of frame.
8. Use all a flutter squeeze punch with another contrasting scrap of pattern paper and adhere butterfly to inside of frame.
9. Finally adhere 9 layered *flowers* you created in step 2 to the front of the ledger.

10. Inside you’ll be writing out courses. I plan to use the first page for main courses (leaving the back side open for additional ideas) and then I’ll be adding sides and dessert pages)
