Red Lacewing Butterfly

Use leaves to create the butterfly wing pattern.

  • Required supplies:
  • Red, Black & White Cardstock
  • 2 Red Chenille Stems
  • Glue Stick
  • Tacky Glue

Instructions (Print version)

1. Butterfly Wings: Cut 2 wings from black cardstock. (See below for template.)

2. Texture Paper: Using oak and maple template, trace patterns on red cardstock: 2 maple, 2 oak leaves. Place cardstock on filigree Texture plate, penciled side up. Texture cardstock.

3. Cut out patterns using the Ultra ShapeXpress. Punch 1/4” and 1/8” holes in leaf tips according to pattern. Glue textured shapes on white cardstock. Trim 1/8” larger all around using ladybug edger scissors. Glue leaves in position on black wings. Punch 1/4” and 1/8” holes on black wing edges.

4. Backing color: Glue each wing on red cardstock. Trim 1/4” larger all around using edger scissors.  

5. Cut butterfly body from red cardstock. (See below for template.) Texture body using the filigree plate and texturing tool. Score body side folds. Fold sides to back and adhere with tacky glue. Glue both wings together at center tabs. Glue butterfly body over tabs.

6. Punch two 1/4” white circles for eyes. Glue in position on butterfly head. Punch two 1/8” black circle pupils. Glue on eyes.

7. Antennae: Wrap a red chenille stem around a pencil (or crochet hook). Pull wraps off pencil. Repeat for other antenna. Squeeze tacky glue in the top of butterfly body opening. Insert the ends of both antennae in head top. Punch four black 1/2” circles from cardstock. Place a circle on each side of chenille stem end and glue.
